Mardi Gras 1996

This was Mardi Gras 1996, the pre-Pride celebration of gay over the August Bank Holiday in Manchester. I have many rolls of film from this year, I think I covered it for Healthy Gay Manchester, Village charity and Poptastic. Will update more as I process them.

The above gallery represents the 2 styles of documenting the film negatives from the event and I’m not sure which works best so any feedback please get me via your preferred method via the contact page.

These are from the Friday where there was a civic event at the Town Hall then on the main stage the King and Queen who led the Saturday parade were crowned.

Then to the Saturday with the Parade, which looks very rainy, it did seem to rain a lot then.

Then to the performers and looks like it was quite a mix this year, some from the main stage as well as The Gala event at GMex I think.

and of course what makes any event is the people, here’s a selection of the people at Mardi Gras 1996

And the whole point of the weekend was the Candlelight Vigil with performers and the vigil for those we have lost to HIV and AIDS.

it was a very powerful moment of the weekend.

I have been making images on film with light since I started making pictures, at first that was the only option but now it is a conscious choice to make images in this way. Not that I don’t love the ones&zer0s but I do love to make images with light.

A construct of elements rolled into thin strips of varying sizes and coated with solutions of silver, mixed into a gelatine compound that creates a light sensitive ‘emulsion’ used for the making of pictures.
